The ClubWhat is The Club?

Crossings’ inner-city ministry for John Marshall students, fondly known as The Club, is now in its fifth year! The Club currently reaches 6th-11th graders at John Marshall Middle and High School on Thursday afternoons. This year, the 10th and 11th graders are on a special leadership track, which will allow the adult volunteers to further invest in their lives and encourage their leadership abilities. Students in the leadership track will have community service projects and will also be assigned to an individual adult mentor. James Moore, a junior at John Marshall high school, recently spoke about his three years of experience at The Club. “The Club has really affected my life.” James says, “Before I came to The Club, I went to church, but I wasn’t in my Bible. Now, I read more. I’ve also learned to respect adults a lot more.”

“We keep the students off the streets, in a safe and Christ-centered environment, with adults who truly care about them!” The time after school until parents arrive home is considered a “danger zone” for getting into trouble.

Staff and volunteers look forward to spending time with these students each week. Amazing relationships are growing among volunteers and students in this ministry! “The volunteers,” James says, “are so friendly and can help you when you’re in trouble or need advice. They’ve given me a lot of help with things like bullies at school. One of my favorite topics that we’ve talked about is sexual purity, God’s perspective on sex, and His plans for us.” James is thankful for the time and heart investments that Crossings volunteers have made in his life. “I just want to say ‘thank you,’” he says, “to the volunteers for giving students a chance to live a better life.”

Consider joining us on the mission field this week—change the life of a student.

How can you get involved?

Donations and volunteers are always needed. An ongoing need is for Tutors for middle school students (day/time to fit your schedule).

What are they saying about The Club?

Here’s what one child said about the math tutoring program at The Club:

“He (the tutor) was someone to talk to when nobody else was there. He’s smart and helped me on some of the most important things I should know when I’m grown up and on my own. He makes problems easier by breaking them down for me if I don’t understand.”

And parental praise isn’t far behind!

The Club has helped my daughter’s social skills, and her attitude has improved, as well.”
“My son is more social, and The Club is helping him to make new friends.”
